RESPONSE: Loathesome and Irresponsible Article Headline of the Day

Until a full trial runs its course, there's not much we can say about Dominique Strauss-Kahn. Evidence still hasn't been provided by either side, except in the press -- but in the press, there's no chance for cross-examination. Speculating wildly about the man's innocence is just as misplaced as speculating wildly about his guilt. And the way that article is framed is just insane in its absurdity.

Thanks so much for your balanced and thoughtful headline about my piece. If you read it, you'd see that it is not a defense of DSK as much as it is a comment on the way that evolutionary biology exaggerates the media's rush to judgment, no matter who is the putative guilty party. What exactly is "loathesome" about considering our neural networks in the context of the 24.7 news cycle

Hi Adam!

As a matter of fact, there wasn't much loathsome about your post. The headline, however, triggered my gag reflex. (In retrospect I don't know if you control your post titles at Huffington Post or if that's an editorial decision). Which is why I called out the headline, which changes the framing of the post from one about how our brain likes jumping to conclusions, to one about how everyone was wrong about Dominique Strauss Kahn. It still plays into this narrative that either DSK or the maid are either right or wrong, and that only one of them can be.

Either way, if you remove the title, you get a fairly balanced look at how the initial framing of a news story prejudices our understanding of the news story. If you put that title back in, the framing of the article makes it exactly the sort of thing it's decrying.
